In 1937 Anne Luke was a founding member of the Art League of Manatee County and first president. At the first meeting of the League Luke said, “The essential of a modern civilization must not be allowed to be defaulted in a community, especially one which is an active tourist center. O’Henry wrote of the ‘Voice of the City’ but what he really had in mind was the personality of the city. To create the personality of Manatee County we should have a steady expression of creative art interest.” Luke left Bradenton for St.Petersburg and later moved to Holly Hill.
