Born in Philadelphia, Ethel Zabriskie Banta received her art education at Cornell University. in 1935 Banta was appointed to the office of Special Instructor of Art for the New York City public schools, a position she held until 1945. While in New York Banta continued her studies at the Art Students’ League. Banta and her artist husband Oliver Smith first came to Pinellas County in 1951. She and Smith exhibited widely in joint exhibits in Pinellas County and traveling shows in major cities in the United States and Canada. Banta was winner of first and second awards of the Nassau Art (New York) Association. In the fall of 1952, she won first place in the representation class for her watercolor, Safe Harbor, exhibited at the Art Club of St. Petersburg and the Florida Federation of Art. In January of 1953 Pinellas County opened a Tourist Welcome Station just north of Tarpon Springs on U. S. Highway 19. Prominently displayed were the paintings by Pinellas citizens including Banta; her husband, Oliver Smith and well-known Pinellas County artists Dixie Cooley and Arthur Covey.
