Daisy Erb, Palm Beach. Gouache, 20 by 24 inches.

Daisy Erb came to Palm Beach about the same time Ben Austrian arrived at the Royal Poinciana Hotel in 1910. She purchased the Enoch Root estate on Root Trail and made it home to a small group of artists. In 1918 as chairman of the Palm Beach Women’s Club’s art committee, Erb helped organize a sketch club of women who would go out regularly on sketching and painting trips. At the end of the season a first exhibit of their work was held at the Palm Beach Women’s Club. Men were not eligible for membership so in 1919 the sketch club was renamed the Palm Beach County Art Club, now open to both sexes. Daisy Erb’s enthusiasm and effort were instrumental in the clubs formation, the publication of its first catalog in 1922, and the name change in 1927 to the Palm Beach Art League. Erb was the League’s founding president.
