Harry Fluhart, DeLand. Oil on canvas, 16 by 20 inches.

Harry Fluhart was chairman of the art department at Stetson University in DeLand from 1914 to 1935. He also taught at Rollins College, 1921-1924; becoming well known for his Florida landscapes. The DeLand Daily Sun commented, “Professor Fluhart’s work in the art department is bringing much results and commendation to the university. He has done some fine work himself and some of his pictures will be placed in the school museum during this term. . . . The class is very much enlarged this term.” Catherine Stockwell, Lillian Wells and Anna Allen were his pupils. A review of the 1926, Volusia County Fair, in the January 28, issue of the DeLand Daily News notes, “There are a few of DeLand’s own artist’s oil paintings, including Professor Harry Fluhart. They are not very advantageously placed, but they show the fine skill of this renowned artist. The typically Florida scenes are specially fine, it seemed that it was necessary for this exhibit to be made, to show that we have a real artist in our midst.”
