Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Harold Maddocks, helped organize the Rockport Art Association. His life-long love of the sea was reflected in his talent for seascapes. Like many Cape Ann artists Maddocks spent his winters in Florida, first coming to St. Augustine for the winter season of 1941. He was an active member of the St. Augustine Art Club for the next twenty years. The St. Augustine Record, February 24, 1947, “Again from the Rockport contingent: Harold Maddocks shows that colony’s famous ‘Motif No. 1,’ the fishing house so called because virtually every artist to visit Rockport has painted it, and he also has a most realistic and academic still life, a heavy-laden table with finely blended and rich colors.”
