Fred Messersmith was chairman of the art department at West Virginia Wesleyan College for ten years before coming to DeLand as chairman of the art department at Stetson University in 1959. In his 30-year career at Stetson he taught watercolor painting, art history, calligraph, and interior design. Messersmith spent his summers on Cape Cod from 1969 to 2008, serving as director and artist in residence of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association until his death in 2008.
