A life-long resident of Rockport, Massachusetts, Stanley Wingate Woodward, like many New England artists, was a frequent visitor to Florida. Woodward, listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and considered one of the country’s best known marine painters, was an instructor at the Ringling School of Art for the winter season of 1937, teaching a class in landscape and marine painting. In 1942 he had a winter studio in Winter Park and in 1953, spent the winter in St. Augustine.

Woodward held one-man exhibits in Boston galleries for more than 30 years. His work is in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Bowdoin College, Amherst College, Wheaton College, Northfield School for Girls, Lehigh University, and the Prudential Life Insurance collection. A veteran of World Wars I and II, Woodward was the author of Adventure in Marine Painting. Actress Bette Davis was his niece.
