- J. W. Carty was a skilled artist and the manager of Tampa’s Atlantic Tire service station. His full-page cartoon of the station, with Tampa city hall, and a young woman in the background, appeared in the April 1919 issue of Kangaroo, the national magazine of Atlantic Tire, the magazine distributed throughout the United States. The Tampa Tribune (October 28, 1951) noted his exhibit at the Tampa Public Library, “J. W. Carty, 205 West North St., whose watercolors and oils are on display in the downstairs lobby of the Public Library, tries to find an opportunity to paint every Sunday. Painting has been his hobby for 35 or 40 years, and landscapes are his favorite subject. The pictures on exhibition deal with Florida scenes with emphasis on the effects of clouds and rainstorms on the landscape.” His watercolor, Bayside, Passe-a-Grille is pictured.
